Speculative Feminist Utopias,

Event 26 May 2015, 16:30-19:00

We warmly invite you to the final session of the first iteration of ReadingRoom, a series of meetings for careful and caring readings led by Terra Critica in collaboration with Casco. Terra Critica is an international network in the critical humanities, initiated by Birgit Mara Kaiser and Kathrin Thiele in 2012 who teach at Utrecht University.

This session is dedicated to feminist utopianism, offering a room for close readings of Jeanette Winterson’s The Stone Gods (2007) along with Jennifer Wagner-Lawlor’s Postmodern Utopias and Feminist Fictions (2013). The author of the latter book joins ReadingRoom to help us delve deeper into the texts and support our learning about the specificity of feminist approaches to utopian and speculative thinking.

“Speculative standpoints gestures toward a vision of utopia defined not in terms of inclusivity and exclusivity, but in terms of a radical hospitality that admits of–in fact celebrates–imagination’s political and ethical possibilities.” (Jennifer Wagner-Lawlor)

At 15:00 hrs, prior to ReadingRoom, artist Adelita Husni-Bey gives a guided tour of her exhibition at Casco, White Paper: The Law on view through 28 June 2015. Reservations are recommended; please e-mail Yolande van der Heide (yolande@cascoprjoects.org).

* Reminder: this Saturday, from 13:00 hrs *Don’t miss the sixth and final Public Drafting Meeting of White Paper: The Law on 23 May at Casco, 13:00–18:00 hrs—the last opportunity to practice law writing and take part in planning law-making processes advocating the notion of space for (common) use, not for property. Please find more information here.

Casco’s program is made possible with financial support from City Council of UtrechtMondriaan FundDOEN Foundation, and European Union Culture Programme.
